My first full studio album finished!
-Tuesday, April 21, 2009 By: Jon Kinney
Well... when I say *my* I mean the first album that I've produced and mixed. My original album is my next studio project and should be a lot of fun. The album I just finished, however, was for The Innocent Men a 7-man all male a cappella vocal band from UWEC. They rocked pretty hard on this album and I was happy to be a part of it.
The album was tracked with another engineer in MN and then the raw tracks were brought to me to do the post production work. I started by doing some supplemental recording... adding parts, fixing a few glaring spots, and filling in missing things that were never completed. After that we worked through each part of each song and made sure everyone was singing the right parts. If there was a big enough discrepancy we went back to the vocal booth, otherwise a quick trip through Melodyne Studio tightened everything up nicely.
I started off using Pro Tools 7 and mid project purchased Pro Tools 8. I was able to get PT8 going before doing much of the heavy mixing / quantizing and I have to say... it is awesome. The elastic time (also present in some form in later versions of PT7) was really key in making everything line up perfectly, and elastic pitch was a welcomed edition if I discovered a note or two that I wanted to tweak without needing to load the full track back into Melodyne. I didn't get to work with the new play list features and comping yet, but it looks like a godsend from what the workflow used to be. Apparently you can see each of the takes (play lists) simultaneously while they still only technically occupy a single track...sweet!
We mastered the CD with Trevor Sadler, an engineer recommended to me by Nate Mendl (of The Cat's Pajamas fame). Trevor operates Mastermind Productions in Milwaukee, WI and is a Grammy winning mastering technician. Needless to say, he was able to dial the EQ in perfectly and bump up the overall volume with some gentle limiting so that this CD sound super professional (if I do say so myself :)
The CD is off at replication right now, and will be released at The Innocent Men's Spring Concert on May 9th. If you live in Wisconsin and like great live music, check it out. Tickets are available by calling the UWEC Service Center, and more info is available on their website: http://www.uwec.edu/servicecenter/ticket/index.htm.

A friend of mine in the web development community is releasing a book called "Web Design for Developers: A Programmer's Guide to Design Tools and Techniques". I was asked to do a tech review of the book and will be sharing my thoughts as well as some cool info presented in the book in a short series of upcoming blog posts. If you want to grab a beta copy of the book head over to my favorite publisher The Pragmatic Programmers.
