BDD: My quest to become a professional tester
-Wednesday, August 05, 2009 By: Jon Kinney
Now I’m not saying that I only want to be a tester of web applications. After all, creating them is what I enjoy the most. However, I believe that to be a professional coder, you need to test your applications. Now I’m not talking about that day or two at the end of a project when you run through the application in your browser and hope that nothing breaks. No, I’m talking about real testing. Testing that is done alongside the code, if not before. To me, testing is a tool that I’m integrating into my coding stack that is simply going to become part of how I write an application.
I’m currently drinking the rSpec and Cucumber koolaid, but have experimented with Test::Unit in the past. I love testing, I think it’s great and when I write a test and watch it fail only to then implement some code to make the test pass I get so much more joy out of what I’m doing then when I’m under the gun and just try to hack out a bunch of shit to make someone happy. So I’m deciding, committing and with time I will succeed. If you’re wondering, yes, that is also the mantra of the p90x home workout program of which I also just so happen to be participating. It’s time to take control of fitness and my coding. Stay tuned to follow my journey and watch me publicly improve my rSpec and Cucumber chops. I will try to aggregate things for a few pointed blog posts, but for smaller light bulb moments feel free to follow my twitter @j2fly.

A friend of mine in the web development community is releasing a book called "Web Design for Developers: A Programmer's Guide to Design Tools and Techniques". I was asked to do a tech review of the book and will be sharing my thoughts as well as some cool info presented in the book in a short series of upcoming blog posts. If you want to grab a beta copy of the book head over to my favorite publisher The Pragmatic Programmers.
